Abstract

In this article, we evaluate the presence of dominated Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) on the Brazilian stock exchange. Dominated ETFs are funds highly correlated with other ETFs, often following the same reference index, yet they are less liquid and have higher administrative costs compared to their counterparts. From January 2012 to June 2022, we found that dominated ETFs represent, on average, 6.2% of the net assets, totaling approximately R$1.7 billion under management. In the last three years of our sample, these dominated funds accounted for 20.4% of the total net assets and R$5.8 billion under management. Although generally considered good investment options, investors should be cautious, as some ETFs are dominated by others.
